Swami Sivananda (1887-1963):

Swami Sivananda was one of greatest sages of modern India. He was born at Pattamadai, Tamil Nadu in 1887. After a successful career as a doctor he renounced his practice to search for his Guru in the foothills of Himalayas. He settled in the sacred valley of Rishikesh and was initiated in the Dashnami Sannyasa tradition in 1924 by Swami Vishwananda Saraswati. He founded the Divine Life Society at Rishikesh in 1936, the Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy in 1948. He has published more than 300 books and articles on Yoga and spirituality to maintain and introduce yogic values in the minds of the general public. His emphasis was on bringing the spiritual and yogic teachings to mankind without distinction, for health, peace of mind or spiritual upliftment. In his ashram, the Divine Life Society, he trained many outstanding disciples. In 1957 he sent one such disciple, Swami Vishnudevananda, to teach Yoga in the West. Swami Sivananda’s teachings inspired people across the globe to practice yoga and lead a divine life. The Divine soul attained Maha Samadhi on 14th July 1963.
